A week ago we had this;

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This morning the Forester did it again with a brand new battery.

-15c, started in the driveway, warmed up for 5 minutes, drove 10 minutes to the school, sat for 5 minutes while my wife dropped the kiddos then;

Kinja'd!!!

Starter whirrs, engine doesn’t catch , no start..

This time I actually left work and headed up there to help - but she called and it had started after half a dozen tries..

We’ve driven it all week and it had no trouble, just in this situation.. now it has a brand new batt so that is not it..

when you say the starter “whirrs,” is it actually engaging the flywheel and cranking the engine, which then doesn’t start?

Correct -(as heard over the phone)- started winds up and engages, engine cranks, but no ignition..

No other symptoms of a bad starter though - Since Thursday when I put the new batt in I’ve probably started it 20 times - and before that as well - always first try, no hesitation, nothing out of the ordinary except for these ‘school starts’.

no “check engine” light? I wonder if the fuel pump (or whatever controls it ) is crapping out.

No cel, and no codes - I’ve got a SCII on it.

Original fuel pump - but no other running trouble. I’m wondering about injectors/ or plugs.. but once it is running it is good - like I was just out running errands (playing around) last night in the snow and it’s running really happy.

Back in the olden days this is when you would hit the starter solenoid with a hammer. It probably needs a new starter/ or solenoid if you can replace just that.

I did the starter dance (rocked it!) for a few months with my 86 Toyota 4x4 when I was 20 and didn’t have the $$ for a starter..

I’m going to have to re-create it myself I think, My wife was just telling me it finally turned over like nothing was wrong and she was on her way..
